Legacy Tour Flyer

Our group of teens, college students, and adults will visit impressive new museums and memorials in Berlin; walk the silent paths of Auschwitz–Birkenau with a Holocaust survivor; celebrate Shabbat in the historic Jewish neighborhood of Krakow; and reflect upon Jewish life in Jerusalem.

High school students will be joined by a select group of college students who will help lead this exciting educational journey. The student and adult groups will be traveling on separate, but parallel itineraries with special opportunities for multi-generational discussion.

Cienfuegos

Journey to Cuba and experience this tropical island nation in a way few travelers do. Join the JCCSF and Lehrhaus Judaica in a unique opportunity to discover Cuba and perform the mitzvah “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh b’zeh” (All Jews are responsible for each other), by engaging with the Cuban Jewish community.  We will do “Litaken et haolam,” repairing of the world with justice and compassion by providing needed medicines, toiletries, school supplies and other humanitarian aid. We will travel together, enjoy the culture of Cuba, and build a bridge of friendship between Jewish Cubans and our Bay Area Jewish community.

The tour features a visit not just to pulsating Havana, but also to Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also includes time in the “Pearl of the South” Cienfuegos, a city by the bay with a small Jewish community.

Ellis Island

New York native Fred Rosenbaum, who divides his time between Berkeley and Brooklyn, has led this unforgettable tour of Jewish New York eight times. He is the founding director of Lehrhaus and an award-winning educator, teacher, and author. A specialist on Jewish communities throughout the world, he has been the traveling scholar on five different continents during the past few years. Now, his focus shifts once more back to his rapidly changing hometown. He will be joined by tour leader Ariel Goldstein, the JCCSF’s veteran travel manager.

We’ll stay in the very comfortable four-star Lucerne Hotel – in the heart of the lively Upper West Side just steps from Central Park – and enjoy the best the Big Apple has to offer. Experience the history and architecture, the culture and cuisine, the neighborhoods and the people.

Tour highlights include:

•    A boat trip to Ellis Island, a visit to the Tenement Museum, and a walking tour of the Lower East Side

•    A day in Brooklyn, including the Hasidic neighborhoods of Boro Park and Williamsburg, and the Russian émigré community of Brighton Beach

•    The majestic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue on Central Park West and Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue

•    A walk (or ride, if you prefer) across the inspiring Brooklyn Bridge and a walking tour of Fred’s own historic neighborhood in Brownstone Brooklyn – picturesque Park Slope

•    Friday evening services at the most dynamic synagogue in the city – the Stephen S. Wise Temple

•    Tours of the Jewish Museum, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the new National 9-11 Memorial and Museum on the site of the former Twin Towers

Israel and Jordan 2009
